Test the judge, then test the evidence.

Three new studies show where an AI quality check can look solid while hiding a weak decision. Start with the broad comparison of judge designs: model choice changed leniency far more than average accuracy revealed.

The judge model can change who gets a pass.

What it saysThe authors crossed ten reasoning models with different prompts and scoring scales. Average answer-grading accuracy was 96.5%, yet switching models changed the share of errors that were overly forgiving by as much as 56.1 percentage points. Human ratings anchored the sentiment and toxicity tests.

Why it mattersTwo judges can report similar accuracy while sending very different mistakes to production. An aggregate score can hide whether a checker is too harsh or too forgiving.

Try thisRun two judge models on the same trusted examples. Compare false acceptances and false rejections, not just accuracy.

How to use it

Suggested steps

  1. Build a small set with independently checked good and bad outputs.
  2. Hold the examples fixed while changing one setting at a time.
  3. Record error direction, item-level verdict changes and human agreement.

Keep in mind The study covers sentiment, toxicity and answer correctness, not tool-using agents. Its answer-correctness labels partly use consensus from the judges being tested, weakening that result.

Yes. One may accept bad work while the other rejects good work.

A correct verdict can rest on invented reasoning.

Published Oct 5, 2026

What it saysTwo security experts found fabricated or unverifiable claims in about 60% of correct vulnerability verdicts. The proposed checker turns free text into a structured record, then applies deterministic and semantic checks across eight failure types. It exposed 87% of errors missed by a free-text AI judge.

Why it mattersA final pass can be lucky. A compact record of evidence, state changes and assumptions makes hidden gaps testable without trusting persuasive prose.

Try thisFor one critical workflow, require a short structured record of evidence, actions and state changes. Check the fields separately from the final answer.

How to use it

Suggested steps

  1. Define the few facts and transitions a valid solution must expose.
  2. Use code checks for exact fields; reserve AI judgment for meaning.
  3. Inject known record errors and measure which checks catch them.

Keep in mind This is a security-specific study over code slices. Some checks miss implicit operations and aliases, and the mutation tests may not capture every real reasoning failure.

Why is a correct final verdict not enough?

It may rest on invented evidence or an impossible path that fails on the next case.

The right number can cite the wrong fact.

Published Oct 6, 2026

What it saysThe study held arithmetic and numbers fixed while moving citations between table cells with the same value. The checker sometimes accepted the wrong financial role and sometimes withheld valid alternatives. On 36 fresh source pages, 25 of 53 reviewer-supported citations were withheld at the chosen cutoff.

Why it mattersMatching a value does not prove that its source supports the claim. Period, unit and business role need their own check, while valid alternative evidence must not be rejected blindly.

Try thisTake one passing evidence-based answer. Swap its citation for a same-value cell with a different role, then test whether your checker notices.

How to use it

Suggested steps

  1. Check calculation correctness and evidence support as separate events.
  2. Add same-value wrong-role swaps plus valid alternative controls.
  3. Measure bad citations accepted and good citations withheld at each cutoff.

Keep in mind The fresh test used 36 selected finance pages and one reviewer, with no inter-reviewer agreement. It measures a component, not population failure rates.

Does finding the same number prove a citation supports the claim?

Show answer

No. The period, unit and meaning of the cited cell must also match.
